Basic instructions on how to DMX

DMX Control system

Codes

1 = 00000, 2 = 00001, 3 = 00010, 4 = 00011, 5 = 00100, 6 = 00101, 7 = 00110, 8 = 00111

9 = 01000, 10 = 01001, 11 = 01010, 12 = 01011, 13 = 01101, 14 = 01101, 15 = 01110

16 = 01111, 17 = 10000, 18 = 10001, 19 = 10010, 20 = 10011 and so on. (That's the coding).

Cable Types

Low capacitance twisted pair screened best foil screened, 24 AWG  7/02

If talk back is used you will need an extra pair of cables, within the screened cable.

PLUG WIRE SHIELD 1 to 1,  Twisted pair 2 to 2, 3 to 3.

Second pair if present 4 to 4, 5 to 5.

Shield must not be connected to the body of the plug (cause ground loop)

Microphone cable do not use (can cause data faults)

Termination

XLR plug 5 pin 120 Ohm across.pins 2 and 3.

Both ends for terminators.

Check if the equipment has a line terminator built in (use at the end of line)

1 CABLE CAN HAVE UP TO A MAX OF 32 UNITS.

Long wire runs greater AWG (less losses)

Conductor no less then 22 AWG.

All DMX cables keep away from power cables (Stops cross talk).

Line amplifier/Repeator

First check if the equipment has a line booster built in to it.

 (if it has,place it at the end of long lines saves money).

Line boosts terminate as norm 100 to 120 Ohm 1/4 watt resistor.

Splitters.

Amplifier are Repeaters.

Important differences between isolating and non isolating repeaters and splitters.

Radio interference.  Pin one to body of plug capacitor 0.001 to 0.01 microfarad. 600 volt working or higher.
